The first preseason friendly for both the A and B teams was in doubt 30 minutes before kick off, the local grounds man deciding not to prepare the pitch at Walfields!

Gilo with his great local knowledge sniffed out an alternative venue and despite the traffic the teams made their way to The Ring. The game kicked off 30 minutes after the scheduled kick of time which allowed time for fans to make their way to catch a glimpse of their heroes.

What looked to be a one sided affair on paper turned into a well fought game with the eventual winners deserving of the bragging rights.

The A team’s big money summer signing, Matt Bone, started the scoring with a delicate lob over the B team’s stand-in number 1, Harry Martin.

Bone was on the score sheet again with a sublime curling effort from just inside the box after some fierce battling by Sean Doyle put Bone through on goal.

The B team pulled one back through Ben Vezza, his effort rolling over the line after a couple of deflections in a crowded box.

A long throw found it way to Doyle on the edge of the box who drilled it low and hard beyond the substitute goal keeper Nathan Philips into the bottom right hand corner.

An injury to Billy Kirsch saw him leave the field of play for an early shower, the resulting changes leaving the A team with 10 men on the field. Brian Freeman took his place in goal for the A team giving Harry Wilson a run out at left back.

The B team came back into the game through Tony Evans and with 10 minutes to go the fear of losing the lead was clear on every A team players’ face and in their passing.

However Stu Jones calmed the nerves of the A team with a sweet volley from just inside the box after a cheeky back healed flick by Paul Reece set Jones up for the goal that proved to be too much for the B team to come back from.

After some decent performances by the likes of the solid Nick Hale, the energetic Matt Hedger, and Mr Dave Hall the management team may have some healthy selection issues to consider.

Final score: RPFC A 4 – 2 RPFC B
