A cold and blustery day at Nescot sports ground saw Reigate Priory Falcons pitted against Epsom and Ewell Colts Hoops in the under 11 Epsom and Ewell league cup final. The Falcons, from division 4, had shown some impressive cup form winning through from previous rounds; the Colts had shown resilience and drive to conquer all in their path. A cracking game ensured with all that’s good about boys’ football at grassroots level.
An early chance for the Falcons saw Sam Parker’s shot well saved, this was followed by some pressure from the Colts, but strong performances at the back by Conor Mitchell, Stan Pitman and Toby Bennetts kept the Hoops at bay. It was heading for a tight and goal less first half when suddenly the game was ignited; Nathan Ashkuri’s corner brilliantly headed in by Samuel ‘The General’ Parker. So at half time the score was a finely balanced 1–0 to the Falcons.
The second half saw one of the greatest rear guard performances in football history. Again and again the Hoops surged forward only to be repelled by Kaleem Jolly, Elliot Ansell and Oliver Tarrant in the Falcons defense. A swift break by Ashkuri was followed by a foul and a penalty, but a great save by keeper Andrew Miles kept the Hoops in it. A superb point blank block by Falcons goalkeeper Sachin Thompson with 10 minutes left kept the score at 1-0. It seemed like it was only matter of time before the Hoops would equalize, but Natty Chalmers and Louis Page brought some calm and skill to the proceedings by holding up the ball well, as the Falcons held out for a memorable win.
