On Saturday 14th July 2018, Reigate Priory hosted an ‘ex-priory‘ team in the first pre-season friendly/exhibition match of the season.
On a scorching hot day at Netherne, it was the old team that could’ve taken the lead, Jamie Williams powerful drive missing the top corner by inches, followed by a Marek Koutsavakis close range volley hitting the outside of the post. However, it was ‘Present Day Priory’ that took the lead against the run of play as Luke Reid easily beat veteran Adam Doick in the air to head home after 25 minutes. Ten minutes later Reid doubled the hosts lead when he latched onto a long ball from Kyle Jordan beat Steve Beckett and Edgar Nadazi and coolly rounded goalkeeper Colin Finlay and turned the ball in to an empty net. Jamie Williams pulled one back for RIPFC just before the break when Kyle Jordan gave the ball away just outside the box, Williams charged into the box and slotted past Mark Halsey; the ball deflecting in off the goalkeeper’s outstretched foot.
RIPFC equalised early in the second half when a throw in near ‘Current Priory’s’ corner flag was thrown in, bobbled and crept under Kyle Jordan’s foot and Marek Koutsavakis capitalised on the error easily beating Andrew Georgiades before firing past Halsey from close range.
RIPFC had two chances later on in the second half but Halsey twice saved well from close range volleys from Rob Stratton, whilst Andrew Georgiades’ misplaced pass from the edge of the box was charged down by Jamie Williams and narrowly missed the wide open goal. Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw, a moment of genius/good fortune occurred when Scott Johnson fed Arnie Saurombe whose cross-cum-shot from near the corner flag flew over Colin Finlay’s head hit the far upright and fell kindly for the alert, Marek Koutsavakis (who had now switched teams) to bundle home from close range.
3-2 Priory and pride restored.
All in all a very enjoyable game and several drinks were sunk by all watching England v Belgium in the bar after.
